Program description:
This project was made possible through a Nebraska Arts Council Artists in the Schools Grant. It is a collaborative effort among Omaha Public Schools, Omaha Sister Cities Association and Janie York. Third grade students in five OPS schools created historic landscapes depicting Omaha at various periods in her development with a cameo insert that depicts each of the five sister cities. Each school was assigned one of the sister cities. These inserts provided the students an opportunity to explore both the physical and cultural aspects of their chosen city. Students created this landscape using a 30” x 60” quilted denim base on which they sewed and glued landscape elements. As we worked, students entered into discussions with Janie York, teaching artist, regarding the time period and history surrounding their landscape.
